Are you familiar with breadcrumbing? You’ve likely experienced it yourself in the workplace, at home, or in a relationship.
Breadcrumbing is when someone uses manipulation to keep you hanging on but never committing to their promises. Stringing people along has long been a way for others to get what they want. And it’s not immune to the workplace, it’s more common than you think.
What does it look like? It could be talk of a promotion or raise, a specific assignment or project someone wants, or even promised career development.
This behavior is bad all around. From creating frustration and distrust to impacting productivity and your organization’s reputation, breadcrumbing needs to be identified and removed.
The challenge is that it’s not something you can see. So how do you identify and eliminate it?
- Communication: Allow opportunities for employees to come forward to identify it. This could be in quarterly surveys, exit interviews, roundtable discussions, etc. Give them the chance to share their experiences and if they feel they are being breadcrumbed through specific questioning.
- Coach Managers: Oftentimes, managers are found to be the culprits of breadcrumbing. Coaching managers on how to lead their teams effectively and honestly can be crucial.
- Be Honest. Many times breadcrumbing occurs to avoid telling the truth (we’re shorthanded, we don’t have the budget, etc.). Employees will respect and trust you more when you are honest and transparent.
Are your employees (or leadership) making promises they can’t keep? It’s time to get out the broom and sweep up the breadcrumbs so your organization and individuals can thrive.
